COUP DE GRACE (Der Fangschuss)

COUP DE GRACE (Der Fangschuss)

A countess' unrequited love for an army officer leads to disaster.  Of Schlöndorff's many literary adaptations, this adaptation of Marguerite Yourcenar's novel is one of his best.  Politics is uber und unter alles but the beating heart of this film, restrained though it may be, is the gay/straight love triangle between Communist sympathiser Sophie (played by von Trotta) who is in love with the German officer Erich, who in turn seems to be barely managing to repress his passion for Sophie’s brother.
