EAST OF EDEN in ‘Widescreen, Long Takes’ 24 March – 11 April

This adaptation of the second half of John Steinbeck's novel centres on the 'Cain and Abel' rivalry between two brothers for the love of their father, with James Dean in his first on screen performance as the 'bad' son – an absorbing clash of acting styles with Raymond Massey as the father plus memorable performances from Julie Harris and Jo Van Fleet. CinemaScope forced Kazan to pay as much attention to visual style as he had previously devoted to his actors. (BH)
