MOROCCO

MOROCCO

Von Sternberg’s first Hollywood film with Dietrich (also making her Hollywood debut despite speaking practically no English and having to deliver her lines phonetically) is remembered less for its finely nuanced portraits of men and a woman constrained by repressive social norms and more for one splendid scene in which Dietrich strolls into a nightclub dressed in a man’s tuxedo and top hat, flirts with a woman and then proceeds to kiss her full on the lips.  It’s a deliciously ripe von Sternberg scene.
