SCARLETT EMPRESS

SCARLETT EMPRESS

Possibly the strangest of the von Sternberg/Dietrich collaborations, Scarlet Empress is most notable for the director’s obvious erotic obsession with his star. Von Sternberg constructs Dietrich’s Catherine The Great as a pervy, sexual adventuress, beautiful, the most luminous object in every frame; a imposed over the top of the narrative rather than a mechanism by which it is delivered.  The film is a bizarre visual extravaganza, with the plot of dynastic palace shenanigans coming a very definite second to the relentless pursuit of style.
