Before Mad Max, there was this very different post-apocalyptic tale from down under, with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire in his first non musical, dramatic role. A nuclear war someone started (it is never clarified who, but today we would have a good guess) has caused fall-out that has completely decimated the entire northern hemisphere. Now the fall-out is slowly drifting southward; the last people in Australia, Melbournians, fortunately, have five months to enjoy what is left of living and prepare themselves for the end. Stanley Kramer chooses to push the point that life is a beautiful treasure and man should do all he can to save it from annihilation, while there is still time.

Produced more than fifty years ago, On the Beach remains incredibly haunting today, almost paralyzing even, in its unblinking intensity.
