It’s been forty years since a shock-jock’s anti-disco agenda descended into riot after declaring July 12 Disco Demolition Night—the disastrous half-time event blew up crates of Donna Summer and Village People 45s in an arguably reactionary attack against a radical music. A month later Chic’s ‘Good Time’ is knocked from number one, and disco faded from the mainstream. This selection tracks the music’s relationship to cinema, up to its explosive fall from grace, and through its presence felt in the decades since.
