50 years have passed since that watershed moment in the trajectory of LGBTQ liberation, when riots spilled from New York’s Stonewall Inn, patrons violently rebelling against a homophobic state. Around this point we track queer cinema, one not told in hushed sighs and wayward glances, but forever proud: from pre-Stonewall shorts, loaded with manic eroticism; through those documentarians capturing the passage; to the New Queer Cinema movement, which brought gay filmmakers into the mainstream without losing a fierce edge.
