The Watermelon Woman

The Watermelon Woman
  • Wednesday August 14 | 7:00pm

An underrated New Queer Cinema milestone features Dunye as a cinephilic video store clerk drawn by the image of an anonymous black actress in a 1930s feature, lovingly dubbing her “the watermelon woman”. In documenting a long missing history, the past refracts through the present,as Cheryl becomes entwined with a fellow filmmaker (The L Word and Go Fish’s Guinevere Turner). Awarded the Teddy at Berlinale 1996.

Single session: screens with Barbara Hammer’s Nitrate Kisses.
