AMERICAN PSYCHO

AMERICAN PSYCHO

Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) has to return some video tapes, something he fits in around lounging at the office, working out at the gym and brutally murdering people. The dangerously handsome Bateman is a living symbol of 80s yuppiedom, rampant consumerism and the commodification of human dignity which becomes of no more value than tradeable goods in the hands of this urban elite. Ellis’ supremely controversial 1991 novel is notoriously impossible to adapt literally to the screen – instead Harron went to great lengths to capture the singular delusions of Bateman, wrapped up in an archly aware performance from Bale.
