Cold water

Cold water

This semi-autobiographical, highly personal story for Assayas brought him  to international attention. Two troubled teenager lovers (Christine and Gilles) live on the outskirts of Paris during the 1970s and drift through life without purpose or strong family guidance. When the two are caught shoplifting, Christine’s parents send her to a mental institution. She eventually escapes and meets Gilles at a bonfire party at an abandoned French country house where a disenfranchised youth listen to Janis Joplin, smoke hash and forget the doldrums of a French suburban life. They hit the road, sleeping rough, and head south in search of a artist commune.  Featuring a fabulous 70s countercultural rock soundtrack that includes Nico and Leonard Cohen.
