SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS

Amid the claustrophobic repression of 1928 Kansas the sexual yearning between Deanie (Natalie Wood) and Bud (Warren Beatty in his cinematic debut) is alive and vital. But class differences and puritanical ideals conspire to keep them apart and drive them unwittingly into lives of unsatisfaction. Their fortunes mirror the economic collapse of the USA as the Great Depression takes hold and the characters are forced to settle for second best whilst clinging desperately to memories of happiness. With this role Wood broke the Hollywood curse of teen stars, reinventing herself on screen as a serious mature actress – something she would be respected as until her untimely and suspicious death in 1981.
