"In my opinion, The Call of Cthulhu is the best screen-based interpretation of weird fiction author H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos ever made. Since Lovecraft’s death in 1937, his nihilistic (yet richly imagined) pseudo-mythology has been augmented and expanded on by legions of authors, fans, gamers and artists. I selected this film for screening in the SALA program primarily for its startling evocation of a fictional universe that looms so large in my imagination and has exerted so much influence over my art practice. It’s also a definitive work of contemporary fandom, exemplifying the way in which so-called ‘fan films’ can embody an authenticity and faithfulness to their source materials that far outstrip their big-budget counterparts.Roy Ananda
