THE PUNK SINGER

THE PUNK SINGER

Kathleen Hanna is the girl who famously spray-painted “Kurt smells like teen spirit” on the Nirvana lead singer’s wall, thus giving rise to the song which was to become the soundtrack for generations of extra angsty teens. Perhaps more importantly, Hanna was also the face and soul of the Riot grrrrl feminist movement as lead singer of bands Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin. Her sudden withdrawal from public life in 2005 puzzled many, but The Punk Singer – an intimate portrait of Hanna’s life from early performances up to 2010 – finally provided fans with an explanation by revealing her long battle with lyme disease.  As much as a film about Hanna, The Punk Singer also does what all the best documentaries do and uncovers something bigger than what it purports to – giving a deep insight into the punk rock movement and its layers of meaning.
