THREE COLOURS: BLUE

The first instalment of Kiesloweski’s trilogy centres on the theme of “liberty”, although Kieslowski contended he was interested in emotional liberty, rather than the idea in a political or social context. Julie (Juliette Binoche) survives a car crash that kills her husband and daughter, and decides to cut herself off from her former life by abandoning her home and possessions and renting an apartment in Paris. Despite all her efforts Julie finds herself irresistibly pulled into the fabric of others’ lives, and in the process uncovers her own past more fully.
