THE HUMAN BEAST (La Bete Humaine)

THE HUMAN BEAST (La Bete Humaine)

Renoir’s adaptation of Emile Zola’s novel is the tale of a tragic love triangle. Jacques (Jean Gabin) a locomotive driver, lusts after the wife (Simone Simon) of his co-worker (Fernand Ledoux – a French stage actor, made famous on screen by this film). Jealousy, murder and blackmail ensue in unanticipated ways in this taut classic. Later re-made as Human Desire by Fritz Lang, Renoir’s film is often considered a precursor to film noir.
