The final part of Antonioni’s informal Monica Vitti trilogy follows an alienating pitch into the mid-century. Modern architecture stands within and against Italy’s fascist past, stalking our stars in order to string them apart, Vitti and Alain Delon distant lovers searching through empty, uniform streets, sinking deeper as any connection becomes impossible. Awarded Special Jury Prize at Cannes ‘62.
