A spiritual mix of the personal and historical, relying less on authenticity than incredible image making, this lesser-known Herzog work explores the relationship between Aboriginal people and their sacred land. The narrative/documentary mix follows geologist Bruce Spence, employed by a mining company to map a desert covered by huge ant-hills, his work impeded by the Aboriginal population who see the disturbance of the ants as the destruction of dreamtime itself.
